Forest Stewardship
Resources
- Sustainable
Forestry Teacher Resource Center
The Sustainable
Forestry Teacher Resource Center provides lesson plans in sustainable
forestry, natural resources, water, and wildlife. The lesson plans
have been designed by teachers for actual use in the classroom
and meet Pennsylvania's environmental and ecology education standards.
Each lesson plan indicates subject matter, grade level, and regional
applicability. The lesson plans can be adapted to fit your location.
- County
Data
- Economic Contribution of Forestry in Pennsylvania
Find out about
forestry in your county. Individual county reports highlight the
important economic and environmental role forests and the forest
product industry play in Pennsylvania.
- Find a Forester - Service Foresters work with landowners in each county to encourage sustainable forest management.
The Community & Urban Forestry Assistance program offers community organizations information on all aspects of forest ecology and management.
- FVS/SVS
Software
Forest visualization
software for private landowners interested in learning about forestry
harvesting impacts on their land. This allows the landowner to
collect data and create images of their forests. The FVS software
then shows you, through SVS, how your forest will change in response
to natural succession, disturbances, and proposed management actions.
- Internet
Forestry Explorer
The
Internet Forestry Explorer is a unique approach to learn about
Pennsylvania forests. Using an Internet enabled geographic information
system (GIS), the Explorer is a set of dynamically created maps.
Two forests are presently available for exploration - Allegheny
National Forest or the Stone Valley Experimental Forest. By following
simple instructions you may take a virtual tour of some forest
trails and special places, or use GIS tools to explore the forests
on your own.
- Forest Vegetation Management
Gain an increased understanding of the impacts created by competing and invasive vegetation in your forest. Competing and invasive forest vegetation impact tree growth as well as native plant and wildlife diversity. The site provides information on varies methods of controlling invasive plants through vegetation management practices.
- Virtual
Forest Tour
The Virtual
Forest Project is a joint effort between Oregon State University,
Pennsylvania State University, and Auburn University, with funding
and collaboration by the Society of American Foresters and the
Sustainable Forestry Partnership. Each of the three universities
will build a regional forest "virtual tour" on the world
wide web. This partnership will allow viewing of different forest
types around the country and analysis of site conditions, management
techniques, and sustainability objectives.
